Another of our older residents, Mrs. Elizabeth A. Arnold, passed away Nov. 23, 1911 at the home of her daughter, Mrs. C. B. Titus, aged seventy-six years. She was the daughter of Martin and Henrietta (Brown) Bostwick and was born at Owego, N.Y., April 6, 1836. She was united in marriage to Lyman Arnold Nov. 8, 1854. For thirteen years after her marriage she lived in Warren Centre, and the balance of her married life in Orwell. Her husband died sixteen years ago, and since his death she made her home with her only child, Mrs. Titus. Mrs. Arnold was a Christian for nearly sixty years, converted at Owego when a young girl of only seventeen. She was baptized in the Susquehanna river, in the month of January, after a hole had been cut through the ice for that purpose. Those who are willing to be baptized into the service of the Master under such conditions have a religion that will last them through life. When Mrs. Arnold moved to Warren, shortly after her marriage, she united with the Baptist church there and was a life-long member. Mrs. Arnold was the third of twelve children and when only a young girl it fell to her to assume the duties of a mother to the younger children of the family, and from the early years of her life, down to the last, she was always deeply interested in the welfare of the young and the work they were doing, especially the studies and work of her two grandchildren, Herbert and Helen Titus, and the great desire of her life was that they should succeed in their chosen life's work. Mrs. Arnold was a lover of music, and during the last days of her life, when she was suffering great physical pain, music seemed to drive away the pain and bring peace to the soul and rest to the body. And a few hours before her death, as her grandson, Herbert, accompanied by his sister, was singing "Abide with me! fast falls the eventide; The darkness deepens; Lord! with me abide; When other helpers fail, and comforts flee, Help of the helpless! O abide with me!" she feel asleep, never to awake again in this land of pain and sorrow. When she awoke it was in that land of peace and joy.
