Joseph Tracy, s. of Nathaniel Tracy and Sarah Minor, b. of record Apr. 2, 1712 at Preston, Conn. [Preston VRs] and bapt. May 4, 1712 at the Preston, Cong. Ch. He d. of record Feb. 2, 1780 at Preston, Æ 68 [Preston VRs.] Joseph has no extant gravestone, certainly not one when Hale inventoried all known Conn. cemeteries as part of a 1930s WPA project. However, when his death was recorded he must have had a gravestone from which his age at death of "Æ 68" was taken.

On Feb. 14, 1736/37 of record at Norwich, Conn., Joseph m. Mary Fuller, dau. of Sgt. Samuel Fuller and Elizabeth Thacher, b. of record Apr. 5, 1713 at Mansfield, Conn. [Mans. VRs.] She d. of record Dec. 21, 1788 at Preston, Conn., Æ 76 [Preston VRs.] Like husband Joseph, Mary has no extant gravestone but must have once had one from which her age at death of "Æ 76" was taken.

Joseph Tracy and Mary Fuller had the following ten children, all b. of record at Norwich, Conn.:

• i. Mary Tracy, b. Jan. 6, 1737/38, d. in childhood Feb. 3, 1745/46.
• ii. Zipporah (q.v. Ziporah) Tracy, b. Mar. 30, 1740; m. Daniel Branch at Norwich in 1765.
• iii. Joseph Tracy, b. June 1, 1741, d. in childhood Aug. 7, 1746.
• iv. Avery Tracy, b. Feb. 24, 1742/43; was a private in Maj. John Durkee's Co. of the 4th Reg't of Conn. Men in the 1760 Campaign in the French & Indian War; the claim he died at Crown Point, NY cannot be verified, but n.f.r. of him after 1760. The first child of sister Zipporah in 1766 was named Avery Branch.
• v. Asher Tracy, b. Aug. 14, 1744, d. in infancy Sept. 13, 1744.
• vi. Hezekiah Tracy, b. Apr. 5, 1746.
• vii. Joseph Tracy, Jr., b. Oct. 7, 1747; n.f.r.
• viii. Mary Tracy, b. May 10, 1749, d. in infancy July 24, 1751.
• ix. Ebenezer Tracy, b. Jan. 22, 1751/52; the 1898 Tracy Gen. claims his was blind and first m. when 40 years old, but who that was cannot be found.
• x. Lydia Tracy, b. Aug. 25, 1753; n.f.r.

If Joseph's gravestone still existed, his age would be inscribed as the Preston vital record states; that is, he died Æ 68, and the following would be added for explanation:

On the day Joseph died he was 67 years old, and Ætatis suæ (i.e., Æ, "Aged," in the XX year of his Age) 68.
