Edith Hanna Rutherford
Edith Hanna was the eight born child of nine to John Adrain (Adrian) Hanna and Susan Elizabeth "Lizzie" Harvick. John A. Hanna journeyed to Texas from Alabama where he was born with his parents John Sevier Hanna and Jane (Riddle) Hanna when he was twelve years of age. His parents had eight children. John S. Hanna, Edith's grandfather, had abt a thousand acres of land along the Bosque River. He was a Texas Ranger in 1856. John S. Hanna buried a neighbor who was scalped by Indians on a hill on his land. This became Hanna Cemetery in Bosque County, TX. where he and his wife, several relatives and neighbors were buried through the years.
John A. Hanna joined the Confederate Army when he was 19 years old. He returned home after the war to his father's ranch. John fell in love with a neighbor "Lizzie" Harvick and they married. They had seven children while living in Bosque County, and moved to Runnels County abt 1885 where John had worked when young on a huge ranch. Edith was born March 14, 1889 and was just an infant when her father became ill and died May 7, 1889.
Lizzie was devastated by the death of her 46 year old husband. She was expecting their ninth child when he died. She named their infant daughter Jonnie Hanna to honor her father when she was born early September 23, 1889, and not expected to live. But live she did to her Mother and siblings joy.
Lizzie Hanna mustered her strength and managed to take care of her eight living children and her widowed Mother Jane who lived with them. Her two eldest daughters Edna Lee Hanna age 20, married John Thomas Tillery and Sallie King Hanna, age 17, married William Ashby Tillery in a a double wedding ceremony at home on Dec 4, 1890. William Alexander Hanna the eldest son was only 15, George W. Hanna was 12, John A. Hanna was 10, and Ole Earl Hanna was 7 when their Father died. The children all helped their Mother on the farm. Eventually she moved to Paint Rock, Texas with her children where she had a small farm. They grew up and each one married, and had their own families.
Lizzie's Mother died in 1914 and was likely buried in Paint Rock Cemetery. Lizzie Hanna died June 28, 1920 and was buried in Paint Rock Cemetery. The cemetery is about six miles from the town of Paint Rock. Five of her children are buried there: Sallie Hanna Tiller, George Washington Hanna, John Adrian Hanna, Ole Earl Hanna, and Jonnie Hanna Barr.
