Raymond David (Pig) Stephens, former McCreary County Coroner, died from heart attack Tuesday, July 19, at Humana Hospital Lake Cumberland. Funeral services were held Friday at 2 p.m. at Hickman Funeral Home Chapel.

He was buried in the first mausoleum in Pine Knot Cemetery. The 8 1/2 ton crypt was, his son Roger said, what he had always wanted. Conducting the services were the Rev. Robert Gilreath, Rev. Robert Phillips and Elder Belknap.

Stephens, 71, succeeded the late Chester (Happy) Jones by appointment after losing races for the office to Jones in 1969 and 1973 and was elected to the office in 1977 to 1981 election, after which he was succeeded by Ted Coffey. Roger Stephens said his father served as coroner for 14 yrs. or 3 1/2 terms.

Stephens said his father had been working out in the yard when he succumbed to the summer heat and retired to the basement of his home to rest when he first stricken. He had a second attack later while seeking medical attention.

Born April 25 1912, at Stearns to the late Francis Marion Stephens and Martha Ann Stephens, he was married in 1938 to Opal Garland. He was owner and operator of Stephens Garage and Wrecker Service at Whitley City and was a member of the Revelo Church of God. A son, Billy, and three brothers preceded him in death.

Besides his wife, he is survived by nine children, 26 grandchildren, nine great grandchildren; two brothers, Howard and Roscoe Stephens of Whitley City; four sisters, Mrs. Grace Scott, Whitley City Mrs. Mossie Ammons of California, Mrs. Minnie Pass of Athens GA., and Mrs. Mary Gothard of Akron, Ohio. His surviving children are Mrs. Mary Ann Martin, Norwood, Ohio, Edward Stephens, Pueblo, Colo., R.L. Stephens, Marshes Siding, Mrs. Carol Creekmore, Ms. Brenda Stephens, Roger Stephens, Mark Stephens, Mrs. Marilyn Hansford, and Michael Stephens, all of Whitley City.

Hickman Funeral Home handled funeral arrangements.
