Roger Allen Stephens age 68 years, 6 months, and 14 days of Whitley City, Kentucky passed away Sunday, November 6, 2016 at the University of Kentucky Medical Center in Lexington, Kentucky.
Funeral services were held Friday, November 11, 2016 at 1:00 pm at the Hickman-Strunk Funeral Home with Bro. Kenny McKinney and Bro. Brent Ford officiating. Serving as pallbearers were Gordon Stephens, Kenny McKinney, David Stephens, Macy Winchester, Aaron Stephens, Steve Stephens, Tom Stringer, and Noah Stephens.
He was born April 23, 1948 in Whitley City, Kentucky to Raymond Stephens and Opal (Garland) Stephens. Roger was a member of the Emmanuel Fellowship Church and was the former sheriff of McCreary County from 1990 until 1994. Roger had many hobbies and interests such as painting, working on classic cars, and playing music. In time past, Roger was a Ham Radio Operator, had played music professionally, having travelled with a number of major artists, was the first drummer to play the Renfro Valley Barn Dance, and a member of The Uptown Opry. Roger was also known in the community for his radiator shop, where he enjoyed tinkering with cars and helping others. Although Roger spent a lot of his personal time helping others, his heart was at home with his family. He was a family man who loved his wife, children, and grandchildren.
Preceding him in death are his parents; brothers, Bill Stephens, R.L. Stephens, and Edd Stephens; and a sister, MaryAnn Stephens.
Survivors include his wife, Doris (Kidd) Stephens whom he married, May 25, 1968; a son, Gordon Stephens of Monticello; daughters, Michelle Winchester and husband, Macy, Angie Stringer and husband, Tom, Christal Stephens and husband, David, all of Somerset, and Heather McKinney and husband, Kenny, of Strunk; brothers, Mike Stephens and wife, Paula, of Whitley City, and Mark Stephens and wife, Margaret of Monticello; sisters, Carol Creekmore and husband, Gary, of Whitley City, Brenda Martin and husband, Bill of Pine Knot, and Marilyn Hansford and husband, Harold, of Marshes Siding; grandchildren, Riley and Sawyer Winchester, Aleasha and Ashlea Stringer, Amanda West, Jessica, Aaron, and Noah Stephens, Abby and Chase Perry, and Carson and Maddox McKinney; and great-grandchildren, Adison Frost and Cameron Worley.
