HELEN PETERSEN
Helen was born on February 26, 1907 at Denver, Colorado, to Danish immigrant parents, Anton C. and Anne Sofie (Nielsen) Jensen. She was the eldest of nine children.
At one year of age she moved with her parents to the Hardy, Nebraska area where she resided for the next 30 years. Helen was baptized in the Lutheran faith and was a confirmed member of Bethany Lutheran Church in Ruskin, Nebraska.
Helen attended Wimar School and Hardy High School. After graduation she earned a teacher's certificate at Kearney State Teachers College, and taught in Nuckolls County rural schools for three years.
On August 6, 1929, Helen was united in marriage to Jens Christian Petersen of Ruskin. Jens and Helen farmed at Ruskin and she was fond of telling stories about their lives there during the great drought and depression days.
In 1938, Jens, Helen and daughter, Doris Ann joined Helen's family who had moved to Canada some years earlier they purchased a farm in the Eastern Irrigation District near Tilley, Alberta. A second daughter, Ethel Jan was born to them in 1940. In 1950 the family returned to the U.S.A., settling in Beresford, South Dakota. Jens passed away in November 1963.
Eventually Helen sold her farm and moved to St. Paul, Minnesota where she has resided for the past 26 years. She was employed at Midway Hospital until her retirement in 1972. Helen enjoyed good health, an active life, and lived alone, maintaining her own immaculate apartment until her death.
'Grandma Helen', as she was affectionately known to so many, was a godly woman with a real servants' heart. Kind and generous, hardworking and hospitable, she was always extending a helping hand to her family, frends (sic) and anyone in need. There was always a hymnal on her Hammond organ open to one of her favorite hymns, "Living for Jesus" truly exemplified her life.
On June 20, 1993, Helen suffered a sudden massive cerebral hemorrhage and was taken to Ramsey Hospital. She passed away on June 22nd at the age of 86 years, 3 months and 26 days.
Preceding her in death were her parents, husband Jens, sister Hedvig and brother Hans Jensen.
Survivors include: daughter Doris and husband Eugene Hervig of Inver Grove Heights, Minnesota, daughter Jane and husband Wes Plummer of Minot, North Dakota, grandchildren: Andrea (Hervig) and husband Tom Wallerick of Burnsville, MN, Weslie Plummer and wife Janette of Troy, Ohio, Dana Hervig of Inver Grove Hgts., MN, Mark Hervig of Hampton, VA, Susan (Plummer) Cottingham and husband Rob of Silver Spring, MD, great grandson Christopher Plummer of Ohio. Also 6 sisters: Erna, Elenora, Martha, Marie, Viola and Sofie all of Alberta, Canada, as well as many nieces, nephews, in-laws and friends.
Funeral services were held Monday, June 28, 1993 at 10:00 a.m. from Bethany Lutheran Church in Ruskin, Nebraska with Pastor Richard Buchholz officiating. Music was provided by soloist Hartley Petersen singing selections of "O Love That Will Not Let Me Go" and "The Lord Is My Shepherd", congregational hymns "The Old Rugged Cross" and "Amazing Grace" were also sung with DeeAnn Petersen as organist and accompanist. Casket bearers were Berwyn Petersen, Don Andreasen, Rex Sykes, Kenneth Nelson, Glenn Andreasen and Mark Hervig.
Burial was in Spring Creek Cemetery near Ruskin.
