A Civil War veteran, he is son of Simon Bartlett and Susan Van Patten Van Patten. He is the younger brother of Harmon Van Patten who also moved to Illinois two years before Abram in 1859. His brother John stayed in Montgomery County, NY and has many descendants. His father Simon moved to Illinois in 1871 without his wife and died in 1875. Abram VanPatten, 89, veteran of the Civil War; a large land owner in Malta and Cortland townships, and a resident of this county since 1861, died at the Dekalb Hospital on Saturday morning. He had been a resident of DeKalb for a number of years since he had retired from farming. He leaves surviving two daughters and one son: Mrs. Susie P. Quincer of Malta; Mrs. Jessie O'Brien and Herbert VanPatten, both of Dekalb. The funeral services were held this Monday afternoon from the Malta Methodist Church and the internment was in Malta Cemetery.
In 1867 Carolyn Boston 1833-1922 made a Civil War quilt with 320 veteran's names, her's and her husbands included at the Benton Baracks in St Louis, MO. The patch at left from the quilt was for Abram Van Patten. See #93328500 for Caroline Boston's Findagrave entry.
