Rites held for Jasper Rish

William Jasper Rish of Rt 1 Houston died Monday, June 30 at the Houston Medical Center. He was 77.

Funeral services were held Wednesday afternoon at Pleasant Ridge Baptist Church in the Anchor Community with burial in Houston Cemetery. His pastor, the Rev. Terrell Stringer assisted by the Rev. Frank Childress and the Rev. Gowan Ellis officiated.

Mr. Rish, a retired farmer, was well known throughout Chickasaw County and the state of Mississippi as a cattleman, cattle order buyer, cattle auction owner and auctioneer.

An active member of the Chickasaw County Cattleman's Association, he was a past member of the Board of Directors of that organization. He was also a member of the Mississippi Cattleman's Association.

During the administration of former Gov J P Coleman he served as Director of the Livestock Sanitary Commission for the state of Mississippi.

A pioneer in Mississippi Farm Bureau in west Chickasaw County, Mr. Rish served several terms as Farm Bureau president. He was a member of the Farm Bureau Board of Directors for several years and in addition served on the State Board of Directors. While serving on the state board he was elected to the State Executive Board of the Mississippi Farm Bureau. He was active politically and a member at the time of his death of the Chickasaw County Republican Executive Committee, a post that he held for twelve years. In 1976 he was a delegate to the state Republican convention.

He was a former member of the Chickasaw County Fair Association and a past member of that organization's Board of Directors.

Mr. Rish was an active member of the Pleasant Ridge Baptist Church which he served as deacon for 31 years. A teacher of Sunday School classes for 35 years, he was teacher of the Adult Men's Class at the time of his death. An accomplished lay speaker, he filled pulpits throughout Chickasaw County and on a number of occasions spoke on the church's radio program.

Born in Calhoun County, he was the son of James Alfred Rish and Addie William Windham Rish. He was a lifelong resident of Chickasaw County receiving his education in county schools and the University of Mississippi.

Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Nannie Robertson Rish of Houston; a daughter, Mrs. Virginia Hitt of Columbus; a son, W J Rich, Jr. of Indianapolis, Indiana; three sisters, Mrs. Julien Rish Tatum of Oxford, Mrs. Hilda Young, Grenada, and Mrs. George Rogers of Newport, Arkansas and six grandchildren.

Honorary pallbearers were members of the Adult I Sunday School Class of Pleasant Ridge Baptist Church. Active pallbearers were his nephews.

Houston Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
