John M. Atwood, 79, of Newton died of complications of a stroke Thursday at Mercy Hospital Medical Center in Des Moines. Services will be at 1:30 p.m. today at Wallace Pence Funeral Home. His body will be cremated at a later date and the cremains will be interred at Palo Alto Cemetery.
Mr. Atwood, who retired from Maytag, Corp. after 30 years, was a lifelong resident of Newton and an Army veteran of World War II.
Survivors include his wife, Maxine; three daughters, Lorraine Potter of Newton, Myrtle Atwood of Carlisle and Sharon Atwood of Phoenix; two stepdaughters, Barbara Engle of Cedar Rapids and Sharon Masters of Monroe; two stepsons, Curt James of Newton and Larry James of Cedar Rapids; two sisters, Ruby Mulbrook and Virginia McDaniels, both of Newton; 10 grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.
