Mr. Joseph E. Luke, 75, 1319 Milledge Road, Augusta, Georgia, entered into rest at 11:45 a.m. Wednesday, September 5, 1944, at the residence. Funeral services will be held at Elliott's Funeral Home Chapel at 4 p.m. Friday with the Rev. Warren Huyck officiating. Interment will be in Magnolia cemetery. Pallbearers will be J.E. Rose, Frank Middleton, Tom Adams, Clark Pearre, L.E. Hoffman and Frank Fulmer. Mr. Luke, a native of Columbia County, Georgia, had been a resident of Augusta for 38 years. For many years he was a member of the firm of Luke and Fleming, cotton factors, and was a well known figure in Georgia cotton circles. Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Mary Middleton Luke; a son, Robert Luke, Memphis, Tenn.; a daughter, Mrs. Claudia L. Durden, Augusta; two grandsons, Edward Crawford Luke and James Luke Gumber, both of the U.S. Army; three granddaughters, Mrs. Albert Lofstrom, McKeesport, Pa., Mrs. Robert F. Cope of McCoy, Wis., and Miss June Durden of Augusta; and several nieces and nephews.
