Arch Johnson Currence is the son of James Laban Currence (1854-1885) and Clara Lee Wright Currence (1857-1948). He was the oldest of five children in his family. His father came to Gordon County, GA from York County, SC in the early 1870's. His known Currence lineage extends back to John Currence (ca. 1753-1827) who served in the Revolutionary War from South Carolina and was in the Battle of Kings Mountian. His Wright lineage extends back to Bolling Wright (1759-1841) who served in the Revolutionary War from Virginia and who was present at the surrender of Cornwallis at Yorktown.
Arch was married to Emma Rachel Strain on 1 February 1903 in Gordon County, Georgia. They are the parents of five children (see Biography of Emma Rachel Strain Currence). Arch was a prosperous farmer in the Sugar Valley / Blue Springs (now Hill City) section of Gordon County, GA. He mostly was a vegetable grower and sold to area markets but he also had some livestock, mostly for family use. However, he regularly shipped home made butter by train to his sister who ran a restaurant in Atlanta.
Arch Johnson Currence is my grandfather.
