James Laban Currence is the son of James Daniel Patrick Currence (1812-1872) and Catherine Laban Suggs (1815-1869) of York County, South Carolina. His great grandfather, John Currence (ca. 1753-1827), served in the Revolutionary War and was in the Battle of Kings Mountain. He had three other great grandfathers that served in the Revolutionary War. They were George Suggs (ca. 1761-1825), and Capt. William Patrick (ca. 1748-1823) and Capt. John Hood (ca. 1750-1819). Several generations of his ancestry are buried at Bethel Presbyterian Church, near Clover, York County, South Carolina. James Laban Currence married Clara Lee Wright (1857-1948, daughter of Jones W. Wright, 1826-1864, and Margaret A. Rooker, 1835-1901, on February 21, 1875 in Gordon County, Georgia. They had five children. James Laban Currence died of tuberculosis at the age of 31. He is my great grandfather. His grave had no tombstone for more than 100 years. In 1987 I raised funds among the family, purchased the tombstone shown in the photograph, and placed it on his grave.
