Excerpts from article written by Bill Torpy for the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, published 3/24/08:
In 1958, her husband, Hugh, died of a heart attack, leaving her with daughters ages 10, 7 and 5. [Note: according to his tombstone, he died in 1966.]
[Her daughter, Ruth] Heerwagen said that drive [to provide for her family independently] came from her father, Cosper Nash, who "drove double shifts in the trolley cars to send his two girls to college in the 1940s. Who sent their daughter to college in the 1940s?"
Mrs. Andrews, raised Modenia Elizabeth Nash in Decatur, earned a bachelor's degree in home economics in 1946 from the Georgia State College for Women in Milledgeville.
She went to work in 1964 for Atlanta Public Schools during the tumultuous times of desegregation. In 1981, she was named director of nutrition, in charge of nearly 80,000 meals a day, including breakfasts and lunches. She retired 10 years later.
Other survivors are other daughters, Beth Crooks and Louise Stafford; a sister, Opal Nash Hicks, and two granddaughters.
