From THE COLUMBIAN, New York, Saturday, Sept 25, 1813: Died: At his residence near Cranbury, in Middlesex County, N. Jersey, Charles Barclay in the 80th year of his age. He was descended from the ancient and honorable familyof the Barclays of Ury, in Scotland; he was the grandson of John Barclay, one of the proprietors and first governor of East Jersey, who was appointed to that station and came overto this country in 1682. Mr. Charles Barclay was fourteenth descent from Theobald De Berkeley (or as the name is since spelled, Barclay), who lived in the reign of David the 1st, King of Scotland who began to reign in the year 1124, and was contemporary with Henry 1st of England, son of the Norman Conqueror. This family has for many centuries been settled on the extensive estates of Mathers and Ury in Scotland. The present head of the family is said to have an income of 20,000 pounds sterling per annum. The family has become numerous and assumed a level with the independent yeomanry of our country.
