65-Year Career In Methodist Ministry Ends

Dr. David F. Helms, 91, dean of Allen-co ministers, died at 7 a.m. Thursday in his home, 726 Brice-av. His death brought to a close 65 years of service in the ministry.

According to his family, Dr. Helms had been ill for a year, but had a fair night Wednesday. Death was attributed to a heart attack.

Dr. Helms has been retired from the ministry since 1946. He served the St. Mark's church, formerly Grand Avenue Methodist church, until the assignment of the Rev. Warren H. Bright.

His colorful career, 34 years of which has been spent in Lima, has been recorded in his memoirs, "Mine Eyes Have Seen the Glory."

Dr. Helms started his ministry in the Arcanum circuit, Darke-co, in 1881 and a year later, when the Madisonville church became a station, be was appointed pastor.

It was 1883 when he was assigned by the Methodist conference to Anna where he helped build the present church. For five years he served in Wapakoneta to which he moved in 1888.

In 1891 he went to Wauseon and from there to Columbus Grove in 1894. Fayette was the next church to which he was assigned in 1899 and after serving there four years, moved to Hicksville to serve for seven years.

Paulding was his next assignment in 1909, then in 1912 he went to the Broadway church, Toledo. In 1916 he became district superintendent for Lima, serving in that capacity seven years.

In addition to his pastorates, Dr. Helms held various posts in the Ohio Conference and was a member of a number of local and college organizations. He was a former trustee and treasurer of Flower hospital, Toledo; a member of the Ohio Wesleyan club; trustee of Ohio Northern university, now trustee emeritus; Lima Ministerial-assn, and was endowment secretary for the Ohio conference.

He held the Ohio Methodist Conference circulating cane, which is held in succession by the oldest retired clergyman in point of years' service for the conference.

Dr. Helms is survived by his widow, May; four sons, Willis D., Malden, Mass.; F. Blake and Dr. Ralph W., Toledo, and Wilfrid M., Winnetka, Ill.; five daughters, Mrs. Blanche Krause, Flint, Mich.; Mrs. Koneta Roxby, Van Nuys, Calif.; Mrs. Seona Milhouse, Cleveland; Mrs. Naomi Cordell, Toledo, and Mrs. Ruth Creviston, Beaverdam; a brother, the Rev. E. E. Helms, Los Angeles, Calif.; 16 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.

The body will remain at Chiles and Son funeral home until 1 p.m. Saturday, then removed to Trinity Methodist church for services at 3 p.m. The Rev. Austin R. Whitmore, present pastor of St. Mark's Methodist church, will be in charge of services.

Dr. F. Bringle McIntosh, Ohio Northern university president, will deliver the sermon. Dr. J. Ira Jones, pastor of Trinity church, will have the prayer, and the Rev. E. L. Motter, Columbus, and the Rev. J. H. Lyon, Waterville, will assist.

Burial will be in Woodlawn cemetery.
