Edna Luella Ackerman passed away Friday, October 23, 2009, at the age of 89 years at the Oldorf Hospice in Hiawatha, Iowa.

Edna was born December 30, 1919 to Knud Christian and Anna Marie (Leistad) Nelson west of Elk Horn, Iowa, where she grew to adulthood. She attended the local country school and graduated from Elk Horn High School. On April 12, 1942, she was united to Edward Porter Ackerman at the Elk Horn Lutheran Church. They had two sons, Steven Ray and Kenneth Lyle. Following her marriage, she was a resident of Atlantic, until two and a half years ago when they moved to Summit Point Retirement Home in Marion, Iowa, to be close to their son, Steve, and his family.

She was a talented pianist and played the organ for many years at St. Paul's Lutheran Church and piano at the Salem Lutheran Home in Elk Horn. She also gave private piano lessons over the years to many of the children in Atlantic and played for church services at the Summit Point Retirement Home. Edna had a love of flowers and nature which she passed on to her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She was a devoted wife, mother, mother-in-law, grandmother, and great-grandmother. She always enjoyed visits from the family.

Edna is survived by her husband; son, Steve and wife Joan; two grandchildren, Julia Ackerman and Anthony Ackerman and wife Cindy; three great-grandchildren, Miranda and Shawn Vollmer and Tyler Ackerman, all of Marion, Iowa; and several nieces and nephews.
