Dorothy May Trites, 82, of Fort Scott, died Friday night, Oct. 23, 2009 at the Guest Home Estates.

She was born Feb. 12, 1927 in LaHarpe, Kan., the daughter of Albert L. and Etta Lou Tinsley Alumbaugh, and was raised in the Bayard and Moran, Kan., area.

She graduated from Moran High School and worked at Aeroparts at Wichita, waiting for her fiancé, Edwin John Trites to return from service overseas, in the China, Burma and India area. In March 1945 he returned to his home in Moran on a 30 day leave and on March 9, 1945 they were married in Iola, Kan. He preceded her in death May 31, 2005.

She was a member of the First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) since April 17, 1957 and served on the Board in various capacities and on the Finance Committee for several years.

She was active in the Anna Bender Guild and the Disciple Women's Fellowship and was treasurer for several years.

She worked for the Western Insurance Company for 29 years, retiring in June 1986 from American States Ins. Co.

She is survived by a son, Don Trites and his wife, Venita of Lenexa, Kan., a daughter, Vicki Brown and her husband, Mike of Fort Scott, four grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.

In addition to her husband Edwin, she was preceded in death by her parents, five brothers, Roy Cecil, Russel Howard, Verle Albert, Verne Eldon and Paul Donald Alumbaugh and two sisters, Edna Fay Alumbaugh Sayer, and Helen Opal Dell Bolin.

Rev. Reed Hartford will conduct funeral services for Dorothy Trites at 10 a.m., Tuesday, Oct. 27, 2009 at the Konantz-Cheney Funeral Home.

Burial will be in the Fort Scott National Cemetery.

Memorials may be made to the First Christian Church and sent to or left in the care of the Konantz-Cheney Funeral Home, 15 W. Wall St., P.O. Box 309, Fort Scott, Kan. 66701.
