Donald E. Rathmann, 81, of Falls City, NE, passed away May 3, 2007 at Falls City. He was born March 30, 1926 at Calamus, IA to the late Herman and Florence (Bunce) Rathmann.

On December 10, 1971 he married Bernice Clark Hendrix at Lincoln, NE.

Don entered the US Army in 1944 and sailed to the European Theatre in January of 1945. He served in the 90 division of the 3rd Army under General George Patton. He joined the 90th Division in Luxemburg, Germany after being in the United Kingdom and France. On February 24, 1945 they overran Pill Box on the Siegfried Line and crossed the Mozelle River by boat headed for the city of Mainz Germany. On May 2, 1945 they crossed over into Czechoslovakia. On May 3, 1945 the Mayor Vseruby surrendered the Town to the 90th Division. On May 4th a representative surrendered the 11th Panzer Tank Division to the 90th under a white flag. Only July 21, 1945 he entered Belgium; July 28th entered France. He returned to the USA in January of 1946 and returned to Germany in May of 1946 and returned to the USA in September 1947 and served here until his honorable discharge on Sept. 6, 1955. He achieved the rank of MSG/E8.

Don graduated from Grand Mound High School in 1944; he then entered the US Army. He returned to Omaha, NE following his discharge and worked at Swift Meat Packing at Omaha, then became employed by United States Postal Service at Omaha. He worked for the VA Hospital in Lincoln, NE as a Medical Technician and Administration Technician. He retired from the VA Hospital and then worked for the State Department of Corrections at Lincoln until 1990. He moved to Falls City with his wife in 1990 where he mowed lawns, removed snow and grew a large garden. He walked 5 miles every day, built birdhouses and helped others. He was diagnosed with lung cancer in the fall of 2006. He was a member of American Legion Post #102 & Veterans of Foreign Wars Post #1765 of Falls City.

Don is survived by his wife, Bernice of Falls City, son, Michael of Yorktown, VA, step-sons, Charles Hendrix and wife Mary, Wendell Hendrix and wife Ruth both of Lincoln, brother, Walter of Dewitt, IA, sisters, Helen Ziegler of Clinton, IA, Beverly Wulf of Yuma, AZ, Rose Burzlaff of DeWitt and four grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, six brothers, a sister, two half-sisters and three half-brothers.

Funeral services will be held Tuesday, May 8, 2007 at 10:00 AM at Lincoln Memorial Chapel, Lincoln, NE, with Reverend Nile Buch officiating. Interment will be in Lincoln Memorial Park with Military Graveside Honors.

The body of Mr. Rathmann may be viewed at the Dorr and Clark Funeral Home until 8:00 PM Sunday.

Open visitation will be held at Lincoln Memorial Chapel from 4-8:00 PM on Monday.
