He was the son of Argus and Alice Aleatha (Smith) Marvel. He had two sisters, Betty Jo and Virginia Marvel and one half brother, Jimmy Burks.

Gerald enlisted in the United States Air Force as an Airman Basic on November 24, 1950 in Tulsa, Tulsa, Oklahoma. He attended the AFTS at Lowry AFB in Colorado from January to March 1951 studying Primary Weapons. In May 1952 he was stationed at Randolph Air Force Base in San Antonio, Texas in the Crew Training Air Force in the Air Training Command. He was promoted to A1C on August 1, 1952. His Cognizant District or Area Command was HqSqSec (NARS) 14th AF, ConAC, Robins AFB, Georgia. He was stationed at Travis Air Force Base in Fairfield, Solano, California, Mountain Home Air Force Base in Mountain Home, Elmore, Idaho and Fairchild Air Force Base in Spokane, Spokane, Washington. He was also stationed in Japan while overseas. He flew over Korea. His most significant duty assignment was the 9th A&E (Armament and Electronic) Maintenance Squadron in the 9th Bombardment Wing of the 15th Air Force in the Strategic Air Command. He was Honorably Discharged on October 21, 1953 at Mountain Home AFB, in Mountain Home, Idaho as an Airman 1st Class (P). He received the Korean Service Medal, United Nations Service Medal, and the National Defense Service Medal and the Korean War Service Medal.

He married Hazel Marie Jepson on April 20, 1952, in Muskogee, Oklahoma. They had four children; Jerry, Ricky, Mike and Larry Marvel.
He married Mary Vivian Roots on February 14, 1981.
