David Ira Fort was born 1852 in St. Mary's (Garner), Wake County, NC, the youngest of 7 known surviving children (3 boys/4 girls) born to farmer William Lile Fort and his wife, Amy Ann Myatt.

He was the paternal grandson of William Knight Fort & Charlotte Lile, a prominent builder in Raleigh best known for building "Fairntosh" the country plantation home of Duncan & Rebecca Bennehan Cameron in Orange County (present day Durham County). He was a direct descendant of this family's patriarch George Forte/Fort who immigrated from England to Isle of Wight, VA ca. 1630. On his mother's side, he was the maternal grandson of Acril Myatt & Nancy Ann Gilmore of Wake County.

David was 19 years old when his father died in 1871, and in 1875 the 23 year old married 20-year old Fannie Hart Wilder, daughter of Gaston Henry Wilder & Sarah Elizabeth Hinton of Wake County. The young couple began married life as farmers in St. Matthews, but would eventually move to Raleigh where David became Clerk of Court (ca 1900).

The couple would become parents to 8 known children (3 boys/5 girls):

* Katherine E. Fort (1876-1958)
* William Lile Fort (1877-1932)
* Sallie Selina Hinton Fort (1880-1950)
* David Ira Jr. Fort (1882-1967)
* Frances "Fannie" Hiinton Myatt Fort 1883-1961)
* Gaston Wilder Fort (1887-1933)
* Nellie M. Fort (1889-1963)
* Mary Gregory Fort (1892-1958)

David Ira Fort died in 1904 at age 52. His wife of 29 years remained in Raleigh, surviving him by 8 years, passing in 1912 at age 57. Their eldest son, William, who never married, became a grocer in Raleigh and supported his widowed mother and later his youngest siblings, most of whom never married. Son, David Ira, married Elizabeth Bessie Hicks Robinson in 1919; and William Lile Fort married Eleanor Huske. Two of his daughters also married. Eldest, Katherine, married P. R. Anderson; and daughter, Fannie, married Thomas Newton McElwee.
