William was the paternal grandson of Frederick Fort & Mary Ann Knight, who came to Wake County ca. 1780 from Sussex County, VA; and gr-grandson of Holliday/Holiday Fort & (1st) wife, Mary Ann Flake of Isle of Wight VA. He was a direct descendant of George Forte/Fort who immigrated from England to Isle of Wight, VA ca. 1630. On his mother's side, he is the maternal grandchild of William Lile (also found as Lyle or Liles) of Granville County, NC.
William's father was from a family of highly skilled house carpenters that included the brothers William Knight Fort (c. 1764-1843), John Fort (c. 1785-1828), and Elias Fort (ca. 1790-1845). William married Amy Ann Myatt on June 8, 1836, and farmed in the Garner-Auburn area of Wake Co, where they raised 7 known children (3 boys/4 girls): Charlotte Fort (1838-1896); Sarah Fort (1840); Dr. William Acril Fort (1842-1911); Selina Fort (1843-1911); Emily L. Fort (1846-1917); Laurens/Lawrence Fort (1849-1918); and David Ira Fort (1852-1904).
William died in 1871 at age 63. His wife passed 5 years later at about age 61.
William and Amy Ann were buried at the Fort Family farm (a/k/a Fort-Barber Farm) which was located on present day White Oak Road in Garner. The graves were removed to Oakwood Cemetery in Raleigh in 1993 to make way for a shopping mall. It is believed her parents were buried there as well, and when removed to Oakwood where they are listed as "unidentified graves".
I do not believe the Forts and Barbers were related, but that Warmley/Wormly Barber purchased the Fort farm after they died, and he and his wife were buried at the farm after their deaths.

His older brother, David Glendenning Fort, married Araminta Harlow Myatt (1st cousin of Amy Myatt Fort), and removed to Alabama where he had 3 children. The couple later moved to Texas in the 1852, where the family helped establish the town of Waco; and where his son, William Aldridge Fort, became quite prominent. David died there in 1859 and is buried in OAKWOOD Cemetery in Waco, TX. with other family members.
As for William's children, all of them (except William & Sarah) are buried here in Oakwood Cemetery. His son William Acril Fort became a doctor and removed to Cherokee Co, SC where he married twice and was father to 8 known children. He died in Gaffney, SC in 1911.
Son, Laurens Fort, never married and died in 1918. David Ira Fort married Fannie Hart Wilder in 1875 and was father to 8 known children. He was Registrar of Deeds in Raleigh and died in 1904.
