George Henry Curtis's parents were Lora D. and Eliza Martin Curtis. He was raised at a ranch several miles S.E of Saguache, Colorado. His education was common due to the duties required at the time.
His siblings were Mary Alice Curtis (Campbell) and Wilbur Lora Curtis of Gunnison.
He met and married Anna Alberta Coleman Sep 15 1896, She passed early in life. His nickname Daddy George came from his kind treatment of the community.
This couple had 5 boys, one who sucuumbed to the flu shortly before his 10th birthday.
Dr. W.A. Settle built the Adobe House in town in "1863", Fred Curtis said L.D. Curtis bought it in 1891. George Curtis moved into it in 1897 and Fred was born there in 1900.
The family ran cattle on the ranch (fka Andy Settle Ranch), one of the first located in the county, and bought property south of Saguache during the depression. The Saguache Land and Cattle Company employed George as manager in 1896, and later was sold to a group from Oklahoma. This operation went bust in 1912 and parts were repurchased by the family (Company Ranch). In 1910 he erected a new hotel with three partners, Horace Bailey "Boss" Means, W.T. Ashley, Dr. O.P. Shippey. In 1925 he was quite active, and shipped a great deal of cattle to Kansas City from Moffat. In 1937 the Crescent showed he was serving as County Commissioner.
The ranch property was divided when George was ready to retire and the boys ranched for many years after. His nephew Perry (Ped) Campbell was a constant companion and passed not long after George. The upper ranch is still running cattle in 2014. (Flying X)
