ELLIS, BENJAMIN THOMAS was fourteen years old when he came to Houston County Village of Crockett Texas.
Born in Alabama Sunday 9 October, 1825 to John Irving Ellis and wife Elizabeth Ann Goolsby Ellis. His parents sold property in Noxbee County, Miss on the 27 Feb 1839.

Married Martha Elizabeth Shirley 19 Oct 1847
He and Martha had ten children;
1. Elizabeth A. "Betty" Ellis Porterfield 1848-1877
2. Mary Jane Ellis Haddox 1850-1932
3. Texanna Virginia Ellis Porterfield b. 1852. I cannot find her, but I did find a son born to her, J.A. Porterfield
buried in this cemetery.
4. Benjamin Columbus b. 1854
5. Missouri Almeda Ellis Box 1857-1899
6. John Beverly b. 1859, never married
These six children were born and living when their father joined the "War Between the States".

~~~A diary stated "The Ellis boys took the flat boat this morning about day break to Galveston and then to New Orleans, Louisiana to join the WAR".~~~

The Louisiana War record shows enlist on May 11, 1861 of Benjamin Thomas Ellis and James Berkley Ellis.

The family story is a young brother born 9 May 1848, Charles Washington Ellis a boy of thirteen was determined to go to WAR was in the flat boat with his brother and the father John Irving Ellis, equipped his fine horse and took two mules to New Orleans to retrieve Charley. Had him mustered out of the army
and made him ride a mule all the way from New Orleans to Crockett, Texas.

Benjamin Thomas Ellis was enlisted but was not commissioned in Louisiana and was not apart of that troop. He and youngest brother (age 13 whom also enlisted) had to ride two mules back to Houston County, TX with father, John Irving Ellis. Ben later that year enlisted in Texas and was commissioned in Texas. (by K. Ellis)


After the war, Benjamin Thomas Ellis resumed his life and fathered four more children;
7. Lee Berkley"Buck" b. 1864
8. Ellen Letitia b. 1866
9. Julia Cordella "Jenny Della" b. 1868
10. Arrie Missie Edna b. 1872.

Benjamin Thomas Ellis died 22 April 1874 and was buried in Rockland Cemetery.
