Joseph married first Jemima Larned, 25 Oct 1787, in Oxford, MA. They had 3 children. Jemima's son John died 11 days before she did.

-John Larned Brown (1788-1795)
-Joseph H. Brown (1790-1871)
-Miriam Brown (1792-1823)

Joseph married Anna Davis, 19 Mar 1797, in Oxford, MA. They had 7 children, all born in Oxford, MA.

-Sarah H. Brown (1798-1803)
-Susan Brown (1800-1803)
-Learned Brown (1803-1882)
-Jasper Brown (1805-1886)
-Daniel Brown (1808-1883) twin
-Danforth Brown (1808-1899) twin
-James Brown (1812-1889)

In 1788, shortly after Joseph and Jemima were married, they moved to Thompson, CT. They had their first two children there and moved back to Oxford, MA in 1791.

On Nov 18, 1791, Joseph bought 100 acres of land from Ebenezer Davis who may have been related to his future wife Anna Davis (needs investigation). Joseph settled, built a house that was still standing in 1892, and remained there for the rest of his life. The most picturesque spot in the town of Oxford is on this farm a short distance west of the house, where the stream comes down through a rocky gorge in a series of cascades, specially beautiful at high water in the spring.

There is a reading of the cemetery posted on usgwarchives.net that indicates that Joseph's wife Jemima was born 1816 and died 3 Jan 1896, but the sources below disprove that possibility. Massachusetts Birth & Marriage Records show that Jemima was born 1766 married Joseph 1787, and died 1796. It is believed that the headstone was misread (year read as 1896 rather than 1796, age read as 80 rather than 30). The headstone photos show that weathering makes it difficult to decipher.
