Enoch Griffith Jones, 52 years of age, died at 2:30 o'clock Sunday afternoon at his home, 702 North Flores street, after a brief illness. He contracted la grippe a few days ago in an acute form. The funeral services will held at 3 o'clock this afternoon from the late home, and interment will be in St. Mary's cemetery.
"Griff" Jones, as he was known to his friends throughout this city and state, was a native San Antonionian, having been born here in 1858 and resided here all his life. He was prominently identified in the city's business and social life and until the illness which resulted in his death, he was actively interested in local politics. He numbered his friends by the thousands.
He was actively interested in the recent commission charter policial battle, and did much valuable work in this direction for those who favored a change in the form of city government, for which he won the deserving thanks and congratulations of those who left a change in the conduct of municipal operation should be made.
For a number of years Mr. Jones had been engaged in the real estate business and was considered one of the best informed men on San Antonio and Bexar county realy values in this section of the state. He was one of the most enterprising residents in thsi section of the state.
In 1892 Mr. Jones was elected justice of the peace, serving three consecutive terms, during which he won a wide reputation for the fairness of his rulings and careful attention to the business of his office. During the administration of Mayor Hicks he served as clerk of the corporation court. He was later a candidate for county judge, but was defeated by Peter Jonas. His death has occasioned many sincere expressions of sorrow, and is deplored by the many hundreds who personally knew him.
He leaves surviving him a widow, Mrs. Kate C. Jones and three children, Enoch, Griffith and Elizabeth and several sisters - Mrs. C. J. Hewitt, Mrs. E. J. Ryan and Mrs. Flora Adams of San Antonio; Mrs. G. A. Washington of Washington D.C., and Mrs. James H. French of Fort Worth, Tex.
Following the services at the house this afternoon services will be conducted at St. Mary's church, Rev. Father Quinn, pastor of St. Mary's church, officiating. The pallbearers are: Active, Bart J. DeWitt, M. M. Mooney, E. T. Tynan, E. M. Nolan, J. Minter and Joseph Mattox. Honorary are Judge John H. Clark, Judge John H. James, M. Shiner and T. J. Buckley.
