Salmon was the son of Dexter and Hannah (Stevens) Ward of Poultney, Vermont. Salmon was married in 1818 to Susannah Proctor and they had 18 children, 2 sets of twins. The children, in order, were Lucy Ann, Mary Malvina, Matilda (twin), Melinda (twin), Clarinda, Lafayette W, Madison, Emily A, Clarissa, Columbia, Jane Ann "Jennie", Harrison Oscar, Amie Proctor, Edgar R(twin), Edwin R(twin), Julia, Reuben and Alvira.

Around 1842, Salmon and several of his siblings, along with their families, moved west from Vermont. They settled in the southeastern portion of the Wisconsin Territory. Salmon and his brother, Dexter lived in Grant Co, WI; brother Asahel also lived in WI.

Salmon was a veteran of the War of 1812 and the Black Hawk War. Four of his sons - Madison, Edgar, Edwin and Reuben; three of his son-in-laws- Gorham G Alexander, Thomas Varney, George Ritter, and two of his grandsons, brothers Judson Albert Cook and William Clinton Cook served in the Union forces during the Civil War.

His son Madison died in 1863 near New Orleans, Louisiana; son-in-law Gorham Alexander was with Co I, 10th Wis Inf, died 5 Jan 1863 and is buried at Cave Hill National Cemetery(memorial #3289776) in Louisville, KY., son-in-law Thomas Varney served with the Vermont Infantry and died Sept 27, 1864 in Harpers Ferry, VA; grandson William Clinton Cook died of disease Dec 16, 1864 in Savannah, GA.

Sons Edgar, Edwin and Reuben Ward; son-in-law George Ritter; and grandson Judson Cook survived the war and returned to Wisconsin.

Clarinda married Gordon Day;
Jane Ann "Jennie" married Wilkes Gillette Rathbun and John Hartman;

Harrison Oscar married Rebecca Lemons;
Edgar married Amy Stevens and his brother's widow, Rosanna McCord Ward;
Edwin married Martha Doty,Eliza Ayers and Elizabeth Ayers; Reuben married Charlotte.
