David Carll served as a Private with Company I 26th United States Colored Infantry in the Civil War. He enlisted on Jan 2, 1864 at Jamaica, NY. The regiment was organized at Riker's Island (located in the East River), February 27, 1864. He was later deployed to Beaufort, South Carolina. He was discharged Aug 28, 1865 at Oyster Bay. With his enlistment bounty of $300 he was able to buy a $200 parcel of land in Oyster Bay, NY on Jan 7, 1864.

David Carll was married to Louisa. He was the father of Herbert, Frank, Wilbur, Cassie, Armenia, Herman, Agnes and Josie.
He later remarried, his second wife was named Julia.

He dropped the second "l" from his last name and subsequent generations continued to use that spelling.
