Born October 14, 1907 to Hyrum and Helen Brown Coon in Pleasant Green (Magna), Utah. Hazel married William Hemenway Bertoch, September 25, 1924 in the Salt Lake LDS Temple. He preceded her in death August 15, 1978.
As an active member in the LDS Church she had many responsibilities as a bishop's wife, and served in teaching positions in the Primary, Sunday School, Mutual, Relief Society, and Counselor in Relief Society, President of the Young Womens MIA and Secretary of the Sunday School. William worked full-time at the Hercules Powder Company and also managed a community store; later owned an appliance store which he relied on her to manage while he was at work during the day at Hercules. They also took a real estate class and she helped him manage some rental property. Hazel spent many hours reading pioneer and world history. Some of her free hours were spent in research at the Genealogical Library in Salt Lake City, making quilts, and crocheting. She loved children and was generous in caring for other people's children; in addition to her own married children in their needs.
Hazel is survived by her children, Merilyn B. McDonald and husband, Dr. J. Ralph McDonald; a son, Allen K. Bertoch and wife, Donna Jean; and daughter, Jeanne B. Dalton (her husband, Dr. Antoine A. Dalton, deceased); 11 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; her brother, Orvil J. Coon (his wife, Lucille, deceased); her sister, Leone C. Urry and husband, Arthur and her mother, Helen (Nellie) Brown and father, Hyrum Coon, also preceded her in death.
Funeral services Tuesday, July 18, 1995 at 1 p.m. in the Russon Brothers Bountiful Mortuary, 295 North Main, where friends may call from 11:45-12:45 prior to services. Burial at Valley Memorial Park, 4400 West 4100 South, West Valley City, Utah at approximately 2:45 p.m.
