NORTH BENNINGTON -- Phyllis M. Bugbee Morse, 87, a resident of Orebed Road, died peacefully at her home on Wednesday, Sept. 26, 2007. She was born in Pittsfield, Mass., on March 31, 1920, she was the daughter of the late Hugh K. and Lorena (Amidon) McIntire. She received her early education in Pownal schools, attending the Barber School and Niles School, she completed her education at the Bennington High School.
Phyllis was married to Perry L. Bugbee and lived in Woodford until 1952 when they purchased a farm in White Creek, N.Y. They owned and operated the Fiesta Restaurant in Eagle Bridge, N.Y., for 15 years, Perry died in 1979.
She was the head cook at the Bennington Catamount Elementary School and Bennington High School. She had served as the state president of the School Food Service.
She truly loved the ocean, especially in the state of Maine, for many years she maintained a second home in York where she spent many enjoyable summers. She also enjoyed league bowling, the out of doors, gardening and farm life. In earlier years she had been active with her mother in the Home Dem Group.
She and William H. Morse were married on Feb. 14, 1986, and resided in Bennington for 15 years. She sat on the board of Southern Vermont College to which they established a scholarship in his name. He died on November 2, 2000. Shortly after his death, she suffered a mild stroke and moved to the Ore Bed Road to live with her son, Roland.
Phyllis leaves her two sons, Richard Bugbee and his wife Roberta of Fairlee, and Roland Bugbee and his wife Vickie of North Bennington; a daughter Florajean Maloney of Cambridge, N.Y.; two stepdaughters Alice Cone and her husband William of South Carolina, and Jane Cole of Bennington; brother Floyd McIntire and his wife, Dot, of Bennington; sister Jennie Helen O'Neil and her husband Bob of California; 19 grandchildren, 36 great-grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren as well as nieces, nephews and cousins. In addition to her two husbands, she was pre-deceased by a brother Herbert, sister Lillian Gates and three grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held on Monday, Oct. 1 at 2 p.m. at the First Congregational Church in Old Bennington with the Rev. Scott Barton, pastor officiating. Burial will follow in the Bugbee family lot in Woodford Cemetery. Friends may call at the church on Monday from 11:30 a.m. until the hour of the service.
