Johannes was a linen weaver and a farmer and vineyard owner.

In 1853, Johannes and Barbara MAIER and 3 children immigrated to the United States from Germany. His passport number was 636. Much of it is not readable. It was given in the name of his Majesty, Duke of Hessen. Johannes MAIER and Barbara HELBELING. He was born in and lived in Bechtheim, Hessen. He attends to move to North America with wife and three children to settle down there. Will travel and come back safe and unhindered. To confer upon him protection and help if needed. Authentic by signature and affixed seal of Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Given at Darmstadt, 11 Feb 1853. He was age 51 or 52. The last number was not readable. He was five feet and six inches tall, with an angular face, oval chin and a mottled beard, with a healthy complexion.

Johannes first went to Cincinnati, Ohio. There his son Heinrich MAIER remained. His son Philipp MAIER was already there. (Note: This branch of the family seems to go by the spelling of MEIER.)

Johannes took the rest of his family down the Ohio River to Rome, Perry County, Indiana, which at that time was a thriving river town. From there they went six miles northwest and settled on 80 acres of land in German Ridge. They built a home and lived the rest of their lives there and were buried on the home place.

On 22 Jun 1860, the census shows John, Sr. (59) and Elizabeth (58) MYER living in Tobin Township, Perry County, Indiana. They had a Rome Post Office. John's real estate was valued at $600.00 and his personal estate was valued at $200.00. With them was their son Philip MYER age 20. Also with them was Elizabeth's brother Philip HELBLING age 60.

On 19 Jun 1870, the census shows the widowed John MEYER, Sr. age 69 living in Tobin Township, Perry County, Indiana. He was living next to his son Philip. His real estate was worth $600.00 and his personal estate was valued at $150.00. It showed him having been born in Hesse.

On 2 Jun 1880, the census shows John MAIER age 79 living in Tobin Township, Perry County, Indiana. He lived next to his son Philip and family.

In 1989, the old home place was still in the family.
