Mrs. M.A. Whiteley, Ex-Teacher, Succumbs in S.L. at Age of 92 ~ Mrs. Marjorie Alston Whiteley, 92, of 124 McClelland St., retired teacher and pioneer resident of Utah died at her residence Monday at 2:30 p.m. of natural causes.
She was born in Southport, Lancashire, England, Nov. 6, 1861, a daughter of James and Ann Molyneaux Alston.
As a child, she came to Utah with her family in 1864 (1865), one of the band of "original pioneers" who arrived in the territory before the railroads.
Married in S.L.C. ~ She married Joseph Whiteley Nov. 1, 1891, in Salt Lake City. After his death in 1900, she became a proofreader in the Salt Lake County recorders office for two and one-half years. She then taught at Hamilton and Hawthorne elementary schools and the Irving Junior High School, retiring in 1937.
Before that time, she attended the University of Deseret and taught in the South Cottonwood schools from 1885 to 1886. Later she taught at Henefer for five years.
Charter Member ~ She was a charter member of the Emeritus Club of the University of Utah and the Women's Alliance, First Unitarian Society. For three years she held the position of historian of the Salt Lake Chapter, American Legion Auxiliary.
Survivors include the following sons and daughters; Joseph Alston and George M. Whiteley, Mrs. Theron S. (Marjorie) Parmelee, all of Salt Lake City; Cyril K. Whiteley, Hayward, Cal.; five grandchildren, three great-grandchildren and a half sister, Mrs. Emma Prye Howard, Salt Lake City.
Funeral services were held Thurday, noon, at 574 E. 1st South. Cause of death: Cancer of Stomach.
