James "Reed" Barnes died at the Gables Assisted Living Center in Ammon, Idaho, at the age of 91. He was the son of Oscar Barnes and Mary Ellen Bennett Barnes. He grew up in the Lewisville-Rigby area and graduated from Midway High School in 1932. He attended Ricks College.

On July 28, 1928, he married Doris E. Marks in the Logan LDS Temple. He worked as a heavy equipment operator and foreman at the Idaho National Engineering and Environmental Laboratory for 31 years. He retired in 1979. He also worked on the Palisades Dam.

He was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and served in various positions.

He enjoyed motorcycles, zipper art, oil painting, fishing, hunting, golfing, baseball (hanging up his baseball shoes at age 55) and especially time spent with family and friends.

He was a gentle soft-spoken man who lived long, loved well, and looked for the adventurous side of life.

He was survived by his wife, Doris Barnes; children: Myrna (Richard "Dick") Pickett and Gary (Virginia) Barnes, of Idaho Falls; Lynne (Mark) Williamson, of Lewisville; and Darius (Sally) Barnes, of Fort Myers, Florida; 19 grandchildren; 32 great-grandchildren; and a brother, Merlin (Eleanore) Barnes, of Las Vegas, Nevada.

He was preceded in death by his parents, 2 brothers, 8 sisters, and a great-grandson, Bo Halford.

Funeral services were held Friday, Dec. 30, 2005, with Bishop James T. Gneiting and Bishop Brian Pickett officiating. Burial was in the Lewisville Cemetery under the direction of Coltrin Mortuary.
