George Washington Hardman was the son of Joseph Hardman III and Dorcas Riddle. He was born April 20, 1813 in Randolph County, Virginia (now West Virginia). He was a Major in the Mexican War. He married Rachel Rush Goff, the daughter of Hiram Goff and Margaret Rush, on November 26, 1835 in Lewis County (later Calhoun County). He settled in a home at Hardman Bend where he and Rachel raised their 10 surviving (of 12 born) children. He died on January 23, 1890 and was buried in the family cemetery at Hardman Bend.
