[Obit] James Henry Barklow (J.D.), 71, prominent rancher and dairyman, died Sept.9,1933 at his home in Norway. Born May 4,1862 in Stevenson[sic] county,Ill., son of Samuel S. and Mary Studebaker Barklow who originally came from Pennsylvania. While he was still very young, his parents moved to Iowa.
In 1872 the family came to Oregon, stopping in Jackson county because of lack of resources. There they met the Hermann family, then came to Coos county, where they first made their home in West Norway near the old school house which is now the John Myers residence. He attended the University at Eugene from 1883 to 1886, following a grammar school education at West Norway. Taught his first school at Gravelford. Among his students were: Minnie McCloskey Lester, Mrs. P.W. Laird, and Mrs. K.H. Hansen.
In 1894 he became county superintendent of schools, but declined a second term. In 1899 moved from Bandon to Arago, then to Norway. Married Jan.2,1887, to Louisa Frances Randleman at Bear Creek near Bandon. To them was born 8 children, 4 of whom survive. Besides the widow, Mrs. Louisa Barklow, the 4 children: Walter Ray, Myrtle Point; Ervin Earl, Corvallis; Mrs. Roy Robison and Mrs. J.C.Keller, both of Norway. 15 grandchildren. Sisters are: Mrs. Laura Broadbent, Lindsay,Calif.; Mrs. Bertha Snell, Riverside,Calif.; Mrs. Sarah Robison, Fishtrap and Mrs. Alta McFarland, Powers; a brother, Nathan Barklow, Bandon.
