Death claimed Winnfield's oldest resident, Mrs. Mary Susan Crockett Jones, 89 years and 24 days of age, Saturday morning at her home here. Mrs. Jones had been in failing health for a number of years and had lost her eyesight about three years ago.
Funeral services were conducted Sunday afternoon at the Baptist Church of which Mrs. Jones was the last charter member. Rev. B. C. Land, pastor, assisted by Rev. Alwin Stokes, Presbyterian pastor, was in charge of the services. Interment was in the Winnfield Cemetery under direction of Edmonds Funeral Home.
Pallbearers were P. K. Abel, Matt Milam, John Teddlie, Prince and John Gilcrease, Cyrus McGinty, R. W. Oglesby, and W. T. Norman.
Quite a bit of history surrounded the life of Mrs. Jones. She was born in Birmingham, Ala., Nov. 6, 1846. Her father was a first cousin to David Crockett, so widely known. The former died and her mother married Mr. Gilcrease and she died in Winnfield in 1896. Mrs. Jones was educated in the common schools of Winn Parish, and spent her entire (adult) life here. She resided in the house which was the first courthouse in this parish.
Mrs. Jones came to this state when eleven years old. She married Robert Cassidy Jones, a lieutenant in the Civil War, May 2, 1867. They had one son, Crockett Kelly Jones, who died when a young man. They adopted and reared one daughter, Viola Geneva Higdon, who is now Mrs. R. H. Smith.
Mr. Jones preceded Mrs. Jones in death by exactly 26 years, to the day.
The deceased was a consecrated Christian. She was a member of the Winnfield Baptist Church, the Eastern Star, and the United Daughters of the Confederacy.
Surviving are a half-brother, Will Gilcrease of Montgomery; a granddaughter, Mrs. J. M. Norris, and three great grandchildren, Johnnie, Willie Marie, and Crockett Jones Norris, of Natchitoches; adopted daughter, her husband and children, Mr. and Mrs. R. H. Smith, Jones, C. E., and Henry Baker, Winnfield; Mrs. I. C. Barton, Monroe.
