Jesse Phillip (Phil) Ward was the oldest child of Fred and Louise McKinley Ward. He was born in the home of his grandparents, P. F. & Mary Catherine Ward in Rosenberg. He spent his early years between Texas and Arizona, where his family moved on several occasions.

In 1935 when Phil was 16, he was in the Civilian Conservaton Corp. at Camp Cochise, a U.S. Army Camp in San Simon, Arizona. It was there he wrote an autobiography of his life, describing his childhood and how he was in the Eagle Patrol of the Boy Scouts in Silver City, Arizona, and made his first appearance on stage in Damon, Texas when his class put on a play and he was a bear that later turned into a prince. He also wrote that his favorite recreations were reading, swimming and tennis. The sport he liked the most was football. He said that he was most proud of his parents, and his grades that year in school (he had been on honor roll three or four times that year).

Phil learned alot of skills while a volunteer in the CCC and later, in the Navy, he supervised the construction of landing strips in the Marshall and Solomon Islands as a Navy Warrant Officer. He entered as an enlisted man, but the Navy soon sent him to Columbia University in NYC to get courses that would allow him to become a Warrant Officer with the Seabees and then a Commissioned Officer. By the time he left the Navy, he was a Lieutenant. During the Korean War, Phil was on an aircraft carrier and served as a chaplain as they did not have one on board.
Post WWII and Korea, he was called back to active service to serve at Bikini, Eniwetok, and other nuclear test sites.

Phil married Alvada (Vada)Cecile All in 1945 in Charleston, SC. He adopted her young daughter, Vadina (Dena) Morris, whom she had by previous marriage. Phil and Vada had two sons, Roger Alan and Jesse Lee Ward.

Phil graduated as President of his graduating class in 1946 with a B. A. in Accounting from Sul Ross State Teacher's College in Alpine, Texas. He paid his way through college on the G.I. bill, but provided for his family by earning wages using his CCC and Seabee-learned skills. The college enlisted him to head a project to bring in wood barracks and housing from several of the military air fields around Marfa and Alpine.

Phil and Vada lived in Pasadena, Texas for awhile before moving to the Sharpstown area of Houston, Texas where they resided permanently.

Phil passed away on February 3, 1999 and is buried in the Forest Park Westheimer Cemetery.
