Mary Jane Stewart was the daughter of Desire L. Stewart and Susan Ann Nancy Stewart. Mary was baptised and became a member of Nanafalia Baptist Church Dec. 1841 in Marengo County, Alabama.

Mary Jane Stewart and Joseph Roberts were married the 27 June 1845 in Marengo County, Alabama, officiated by John G. Williams, M.G. and Robert Blakeney was the bondsman.

Joseph & Mary were the parents of four children, all four were born in Marengo County, Alabama, the children were John Bethel, Nancy Amanda, Charles Middleton Breaker and James Desire Roberts.

John and Charles were the namesakes of pastors who had conducted services at the Nanafalia Baptist church. James middle name 'Desire' was his maternal grandfather's given name. Nancy was the name of Nancy Amanda's maternal grandmother.

Mary Jane Stewart died Jan. 5, 1855, her death date was recorded in the Nanafalia Baptist Church records, she was living in or near Nanafalia, Marengo County, Alabama at the time of her death.
