Joseph Roberts was born 1814 in South Carolina. He left South Carolina before February 1834 and settled in Marengo County Alabama where he joined the Nanafalia Baptist Church in 1835 along with several Roberts and Davis relatives who are listed below, most of their church membership numbers are in sequence. Joseph was #65 - baptized in 1835.

During the time Joseph was a Deacon at Nanafalia Baptist church he attended numerous church business meetings, which are recorded in the church minutes. He was a member of this church 1835-1856.

Joseph Roberts parents are unknown to this writer, nor has there ever been a middle name or initial for Joseph on any record that has been located on him.

The earliest known record of Joseph at age 20, is his first marriage to Mary A. Johnson Feb. 1834 in Marengo County Al., Stephen Williams, M.G. and George D. Williams bondsman were brothers from Horry County, S.C. The church Joseph joined in 1835 was organized in 1831, the first pastor was John G. Williams, brother to the above mentioned Stephen and George D. Williams. Joseph may have been from Horry County S.C., it appears he knew these men who were brothers.

Joseph Roberts and Mary A. Johnson were united in marriage the 20 Feb. 1834 in Marengo County Alabama. Mary Johnson died in 1845, this date is recorded in the Nanafalia Baptist church records.

Joseph's first wife Mary Johnson died in 1845, his second wife Mary Stewart died in 1855, Joseph died 1857, leaving the children orphans. Mary Stewart's children were age eight and younger. The below mentioned relatives who were still living when Joseph died raised Joseph and Mary Stewart's sons.

"John Bethel Roberts was five when his mother died. Then at the age of 8, his father died."
(Note: Joseph Roberts was alive and was dismissed by letter from Nanafalia Baptist Church December 20, 1856, his son John Bethel Roberts was age 9 on April 22, 1857.)
