HUMES – At New Wilmington, Pa., on Monday June 4, 1883, of typhoid pneumonia, Mr. Alexander Humes, aged 56 years.

(obituary – "Maggie's scrapbook" – clipping from unknown newspaper)

The sudden demise of Mr. Alexander Humes, at New Wilmington, Pa., fell as a shock in this community, where he was so well and favorably known, having resided here till about 4 years since, or prior to his moving to New Wilmington. The corpse arrived on the 3:30 eastward train, accompanied by many friends and relatives. A large assemblage was in waiting to view the remains, such an opportunity having been previously announced. Hearse and hacks were in waiting, and the funeral proceeded to Prospect Cemetery, where the interment was made in the family lot. It was only about a year since the remains of the son Charles was sent here to be buried. A sorrowing wife and daughter and a little boy are left to mourn their loss. Let the casket's inscription (at rest) be their consolation till they meet in a better world.
