John Heinrich Ernest Ahrens was born July 2, 1887, in the Town of Center, Wisconsin. His father, Joachim H., was 34 and his mother, Marie Levezow, was 24. John was confirmed March 31, 1901 at St. John Evangelical Lutheran Church in Center. He married Frances Rieke Emma Schwab February 22, 1909, in Menominee, Michigan. They had five children: Gilbert, Irene, William O. "Bill, Henry "Hank", and Evelyn.

After his first wife Frances, died, he married Margaret (Muthig) Martin who had one child Roy Martin and they lived at 711 E. Fremont St. in Appleton, WI.
