George Hampshire served in the York Militia, as a member of Captian Hoover's company out of the township York County, Pennsylvania during the Revolution 1776.

While serving a year, he lost an eye. After his service, he then moved his family to Maryland, where he purchased 200 acres of land from one of his nephews Barnet for $1,000 that was known as "Stanbury Grove."

George continued to add to his land holdings adding "Yoders Farm" from Henry Mesemore, which was 11 acres. Then George added an additional 13 acres.

George perused, to great effect, the policy that veterans who served in the war would be granted land. Under that policy, George was granted and received 650 acres in Zanesville, Ohio that he either then sold or traded to his nephew, Barnet.

This Ohio land was the key gateway for the Hampshires to migrate to Ohio, and then across the United States.

in the 72nd year of his age.

A man sedate of sober mind,
To wife and children ever kind
But though great merit many have
Death summons all men to the grave.
