VanDoran "Van" Kerekes of Naples, FL, went to be with his Lord on Saturday, January 5, 2008.

Van grew up in Maumee, OH where he was president of his senior class (1970) and co-captain of the varsity baseball team at Maumee High School.

He married Robin Heilman, who was his high school sweetheart, in 1974, then began his life-long career in the newspaper industry, first at the Toledo Blade newspaper.

After relocating to Naples in 1977, Van took a brief career diversion as a stone crabber working for his father-in-law. Some of his best memories were of heading out Gordon's Pass early in the morning on the Miss Anteris, with a cup of coffee in his hand and dolphins playfully jumping alongside the boat.

He joined the Ft. Myers News-Press later that same year, working as an outside advertising sales representative for 20 years before joining the Naples Daily News family for the last ten years.

Van loved sports of all kinds, especially baseball, football and hockey. He was also a very talented baseball player who cherished all the memories from years of playing softball here in Naples with all of his softball buddies.

He leaves behind his wife, Robin, and his son, Joshua, who everyone knows was the apple of his eye.

Van is survived by his mother, Margaret Kerekes, of E. North Port, NY, and his two best friends, his brothers, William (Kathy) Kerekes of Hempstead, NY and Christopher Kerekes of Naples, FL; as well as his very special nephews, Cullen Kerekes of Albany, NY and Kieran Kerekes of Hempstead, NY.

Van was predeceased by his father, William Kerekes, in 1987.

He will be sorely missed by his father and mother-in-law, Everett and Donna Short of Naples.

A private family viewing and celebration of Van's life was held on Tuesday, January 9th at Muller-Thompson Funeral Home, Naples.

The family wishes to remember and thank all the people who touched Van's life during his 35 plus year newspaper career. We especially want to thank Muller-Thompson Funeral Home and Pastor Steve Hayes of First Baptist Church of Naples for making our final time with Van so meaningful and memorable.

In lieu of flowers, donations in Van's memory may be made to the Lupus Foundation of America, Greater Florida Chapter, 3637 4th Street North, Suite 390 or to the Cancer Alliance of Naples, FL 34102.
