He was accidentally shot to death on a hunting Trip.

Written by Maurice Hagen about his sons death.

August 12th, Gerhard got killed, 15 days before he was 21 years old.

He was shot with a 32 special High Power Rifle hit in the back of the head, never regained consciousness and died in about 15 minutes. The boy that shot him was about 16 years old, and after the accident when he realized what had happened he turned almost crazy and grabbed the same gun and was going to kill himself, but another member of the party was so much stronger that he got the gun away from him, but he stripped nearly all his clothes off of himself.

He came to my place and told what had happened. He had just part of his pants and his shoes left. The accident happened about 4 miles from home in the woods, and we had to carry him out on a stretcher. It happened about 4 o'clock in the afternoon and we did not get him home until about 4 o'clock the next morning. There was about 20 of us in the bunch to carry him home. He would have graduated from High school next June.

He was of very good standing at school amongst his teachers and school mates. He didn't use tobacco, drink or dance, was a great athlete, drove school bus two years, and was a very good boy around home, Handy and a good worker and was always jolly.
