Rosana J. Chapman was born in Southampton, Massachusetts, in 1870, but a birth record was unobtainable. Her birthplace was identified in her marriage record at Westfield, Hampden, Massachusetts. The actual date of her birth was identified from a handwritten family record. Since she had not yet been born she was not identified in the 1870 United States census with her parents enumerated in July at Southampton, Massachusetts. The 1880 United States census was barely legible and her name was indexed as Rosemary J. Chapman. Her marriage to William W. Gibbons occurred in Westfield, Massachusetts, on December 23, 1893, where she was married by Frederick Woods, clergyman. The 1900 United States census enumerated at Westfield, Hampden, Massachusetts, identified William W. Gibbons age 30 with wife Rosa J. Gibbons age 29 and three children. Her birthdate was given as October 1870. By 1910, the oldest child Harold W. Gibbons age 15 was working for Arthur D. Avery. Rosana Jane (Chapman) Gibbons had already lost a stillborn daughter and three children, Emma Ruth Gibbons, Irving Searle Gibbons, and Ruth Eveline Gibbons, when she was left a widow with two surviving children as the result of a tragic house fire that claimed the lives of her husband and two of her four surviving children at Westfield, Hampden, Massachusetts, in 1915. She wrote, "Dear little hands we mis them, Harold, Ida and me alone. The angels called them to go." as the first stanza of a longer poem. In the 1930 United States census she appeared with the her daughter Ida's first husband and three grandchildren. She resided with her son Harold and his family at Westfield, Hampden, Massachusetts, during her declining years.
