William Jefferson Bass, son of Jeremiah and Sarah E. (Phillips) Bass, was born at Mount Carmel, [Marion County], Mississippi, October 8, 1843, and died at Hattiesburg, [Forrest County], Mississippi, October 19, 1917. During the Civil War, he served as a Private and later as Sergeant of Company G, 7th Mississippi Infantry. This company was known as Goode's Rifles of Lawrence County and was under the command of Capt. E. J. Goode. The Regiment was organized September 25, 1861, and in December of that year was stationed at Bay Saint Louis, Mississippi; it then started for Tennessee but was recalled at Corinth, Mississippi, and assigned under General A. S. Johnson to the "High Pressure" Brigade of General J. R. Chalmers. The Regiment, under Lt. Colonel H. Mayson, participated in the Battle of Shiloh and many other engagements. Mr. Bass had fours of service in the Civil War and was wounded at Atlanta, Georgia.
William Jefferson Bass and Lou Elizabeth Webb, daughter of Walter and Courtney Webb, were married at Columbia, [Marion County], Mississippi, August 22 1865; they resided at various times at Columbia, Rawls Spring, Eatonville, and Hattiesburg, Mississippi, where Mr. Bass engaged in farming and in later life in hotel management.
The following children were born to this first marriage of William Jefferson Bass:
