"Mel" Ritchie, a physician in Harrisburg for thirty-five vears and
first successfully to use anti-toxin for diphtheria in this city, was born in 1850 in Bedford.
He was the eldest son of the late Josiah and Emily Jane Ritchie. Following graduation from Jefferson Medical College,
Philadelphia, he was resident physician at Jefferson Hospital for two years.
Doctor Ritchie then came to Harnsburg to begin his practice. He served for several terms in the old Common Council
and as City Health Officer for three terms. He was a member -of the Dauphin County Medical Society; Post 58, G. A. R and
Salem Reformed Church. Doctor Ritchie married Miss Margaret Jane Gilbaugh, of Huntingdon, and they resided at
36 South Thirteenth street.
