Gilbert Marshall and Martha Rowan married 1 June 1748 and Martha is on the Carnmoney Presbyterian records in the county of Antrim, North Ireland. She was the daughter of William and Jane (Marshall) Rowan. They were a well known family in Antrim and were of English descent. Gilbert and Martha had their first child christened in Antrim County, Ireland, 22 April 1750, in the little parish of Carnmoney, which was within walking distance of Belfast. Later that same year they sailed for America. For the next two years they lived in Pennsylvania, in a community known as Little Britain, where their second child was born. They moved to Albemarle County, Virginia and bought two hundred fifty acres of land on Bach Creek in 1753, where their other ten children were born.
