He was the son of John W. and Henrietta Andrews Truitt. He received a degree in mechanical engineering from N. C. State University. He was a co-founder of Carolina Steel in 1919 and served as its vice-president for 21 years. He founded Truitt Manufacturing Co. in 1941 and was its president until 1957. In 1960 he organized the Truitt Metal Fabricators and served as its president. He taught the Truitt Bible Class at Christian (now Congregational UCC) for more than 50 years. He was a trustee at Elon College and on the board of Elon Children's Home. The Truitt's had five children: William O., Wallace, Frances Smith, Dorothy Powell and John.
