He married Henrietta J. Andrews on July 8, 1865. He worked as a wheelwright, had a buggy and wagon repair shop and later a carpenter repair shop. They moved to Greensboro about 1893. He was a charter member of the First Christian Church, Greensboro. The Truitts had six children: Mary Jane, Luvenia, James, Sarah Williams, Nannie Foster and William.
