In Lindsay, Clara Wiese, the daughter of German immigrant grocery store owners Paul Wiese and Anna Steinmetz Wiese, was married in the spring of 1917 to William Schmitz; the following year, in April of 1918, she gave birth to Leo William, whom they referred to as Billy. Only a few months later, as the war was ending, the spreading flu pandemic caused a worldwide panic, and tragedy struck the Schmitz family. Little more than 2 weeks after the joyous news of the November 11th Armistice, William died on November 27th, 1918; seven-month old Billy died the next day. Father and son were laid to rest in the St. Peter's cemetery in Lindsay, the baby cradled in his father's arms.

Two years later, Clara married Val Dieter, whom we all knew as "grandpa Dieter" – few of us grew up knowing that this was her second marriage.
